Hayley Leece

Brathay 10in10 Athlete

I am Hayley Leece, I am originally from Millom but now live in Ambleside with my husband Tom and my rescue dog Cher.

I got into running ten years ago and to begin with I couldn’t run a mile. I just kept going and going, trying and trying…  eventually I could manage a mile, then a mile turned into a 10k, a 10k turned into a half marathon, then I got a charity place for the London Marathon in 2015. Since 2015 I have ran 9 marathons and raised more than £7000 for charity.

Running has changed my life in ways I can’t even begin to describe, and I am so grateful for my 10-year-ago self that she kept going when she was finding it so hard – I still cannot believe how far I have come.

For years I have watched the Brathay 10 in 10 runners coming through Ambleside and have always been in complete awe of them. I started working at Brathay in September 2022 and was working during the May 2023 10 in 10 event and got the opportunity to speak to some of the runners every day. Talking to them planted a seed in my mind that one day I would like to give it a try, then, on the day of the final marathon, just after we saw the 10 in 10 runners off, I found a 10p on the lawn and took it a divine sign that I should sign up for 2024. I kept the 10p safe and plan on putting it on a necklace to wear during the event.

One of the things that keeps me motivated is that I have three young nieces and a nephew, and I hope one day they will look at their mad Aunty taking on this epic challenge and it will inspire them to decide what crazy things they want to do in life and just go for it. If I make it to the end, which I am so determined to do, I already cannot wait to see my family at the finish line on the final day.

Working at Brathay as a Duty Manager, I get to see first-hand the great work that this charity does for young people. Aside from the personal challenge I have set myself, it also feels great to be raising money to support such a worthy cause.
