James Thomas

brathay 10in10 athlete

I am James Thomas, 32, From Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria.

My running club is Walney Wind Cheetahs & I started running in 2017. I am a Commissioning Engineer for BAE Systems who currently build nuclear submarines for the Royal Navy.

I started running initially to lose weight after doing Blackpool Half marathon & struggled from the first mile. So I signed up for my first marathon for motivation which was Loch Ness (September 2017). I just managed a sub 4 but vowed never to do one again as I was in that much pain. However, the next day I signed up to Manchester marathon in 2018. This is where I met 10in10 runner Sonja Farish who told me about the event & I was instantly hooked on the idea of pushing my mind & body so I applied straight away & was lucky enough to get a place for 2019. Since then I have completed the 10in10 in 2019 & 2021 raising over £4000 each time & another 20 Marathons in-between. London 2023 being one of the biggest highlights!

Being involved with Brathay you see what an amazing charity they are & how they help people in many ways in life. Especially when they help people in my town Barrow.

This is what motivates me to return to the 10in10 for the third time along with the personal challenge.
