A beautiful, challenging marathon course set in England’s most spectacular mountain scenery. The Langdale Marathon has a reputation as the toughest road marathon in the UK.

Taking in two laps of the Half Marathon course and reaching gradients of 1:3, this stunning marathon attracts both seasoned runners and a large number people looking for their next challenge.

You need to be 18 years or over on the day of the event.

Entries will close at 11:00am on Wednesday 16th October 2024, or when entries reach the maximum number of 250, whichever comes first.

You will receive email confirmation of your entry. Please also check this website and our social media channels regularly for further information. Race day instructions will be sent by email on Monday 14th October.

We will send out a final instructions email on Monday 14th October which will include the information you need to register.

You will need to collect your race number and timing chip when you register before the event.

Registration will be open from 08:00 – 10:00am on the morning of the event at the New Dungeon Ghyll Hotel, Langdale.

We are unable to offer refunds or deferrals in case of cancellation but you may transfer your entry to another Brathay Challenges event in the same year. Please contact us to if you wish to transfer to another event. All requests must be made at least 1 week before race day.

Car parking is available in the Great Langdale valley close to the event centre.

1. Event carparking fields: £10. Access available from 8am.

If you have pre-booked parking as part of your entry, a car parking pass will be emailed to you with the race day instructions email on Monday 14th October. This will need to be presented to the marshals on the day.  If you haven’t prebooked carparking you can pay on the day CASH ONLY

2. National Trust Pay & Display car park: £7 up to 4hrs; £8.50 all day.

3. Lake District National Park Pay & Display car park: £6 up to 4hrs; £8 all day. (This may have changed).

There are no changing facilities. There will be limited bag storage for those who arrive by public transport in a tent at the event centre.

The race will start at 10.30am

The time limit for completion of the course is 6hrs 30mins. Runners must be complete their first lap and pass New Dungeon Ghyll Hotel before 3hrs 15mins. Anyone who does not complete the first lap within the time limit will be asked to retire from the event.

There is no provision for picking up tired or injured runners except for in exceptional circumstances.

The refreshment stations are located at:

  1. Refreshment station 1 at 2.4 miles / 15.6 miles
  2. Refreshment station 2 at 5.5 miles / 18.6 miles
  3. Refreshment station 3 at 10.5 miles / 23.6 miles
  4. Refreshment station 4 (Marathon Only) at 13.4 miles
  5. Finish Line 13.1 miles / 26.2 miles

All have water and Voom Hydrate electrolyte drink in cups.

Unfortunately you can’t run with a dog.

The wearing of headphones (in-ear or over), or similar devices, (other than those medically prescribed), is not permitted. Runners can run with bone conducting headphones.

No facilities are available at the event centre.

The awards ceremony will be at the event centre beginning at 3:00pm. Trophies and prizes will be awarded to the race winners and winners in the following age category:

  • FVET40
  • MVET50
  • FVET50
  • MVET60
  • FVET60
  • MVET70
  • FVET70

A full set of results will be available shortly after the race on the Brathay Challenges website and via post event newsletters and social media. All runners who complete the Langdale Marathon will receive a medal.
