What's new and exciting in adventure cycling?

Brathay Cycling, in partnership with the Adventure Cycle Festival, bring you the Brathay Cycling Festival. The Event Village at Brathay Hall provides a hub from where organised activities will launch including the Shillies ‘Undred, a 100km ‘gravel challenge event’, a guided overnight bikepacking trip across the Lakes, a loaded hill climb challenge, social ride in from the station to promote leaving the car at home and self-guided trips. There will be the chance to try demo bikes and equipment, plus attend workshops, lectures and an evening bar with live music.

Lyon Equipment, the event organisers, said: “With the rise in adventure cycling’s popularity, we felt there was an opportunity for a highly targeted event where likeminded individuals, brands and organisations could come together to celebrate travel on two wheels. As a distributor, we have been able to invite brands from both the cycle and outdoor industries which has allowed for an extremely diverse list of supporters.”

The headline speaker is adventure cycling royalty; Mark Beaumont, who held the world records for cycling around the world and riding across Africa solo. Mark Beaumont commented on the event:

“I am thrilled to be speaking at the Adventure Cycle Festival this summer. The event’s charitable nature and aim of inspiring more people to have adventures on two wheels can only be commended. I hope that by speaking about my previous expeditions and this year’s exciting plans I will be able to share the thrill of adventure cycling.”

Demo Bike

The Adventure Cycle Festival will very much be a forum for suppliers and industry players to showcase their latest and greatest. There will be a small offroad loop within Brathay's grounds to allow you to demo bikes from some of the leading adventure bike brands, including Shand, Salsa, Bombtrack, Smokestone, Surly, Ritchey & Kinesis.

You may also be able to demo bikepacking bags from luggage brands like Ortlieb, Wildcat Gear and Miss Grape.

Packrafting Essentials

Packrafting could well be the missing link in your quest for adventure.  A packraft is a small lightweight inflatable boat, light enough to carry on your back, opening up a whole new world of bikepacking options. Bothy to bothy across the Scottish Lochs? A traverse of Norways's Lofoton archipelago? This workshops allows you to try a packraft under the supervision of Andy Toop from Backcountry Scotland.

Amongst others we're joined my adventure cycling legend Mark Beaumont

Adventure Cycle Festival 3

Our headline speaker this year is adventure cycling royalty: Mark Beaumont held the world record for cycling around the world. He also set the world record for riding across Africa solo. His social media feeds suggest he is planning something major, so expect this presentation to cover his previous expeditions and an insight into his new plans.

Mark Beaumont's first taste for adventure cycling started at the age of 11, when he pedalled across his homeland of Scotland.  In the past decade this wanderlust has taken him to around 130 countries, around the World, the length of the Americas and Africa.  World firsts and records have become Marks hallmark.

Also on the podium will be Pete McNeil (Adventure Pedlars) on riding the Highland 550, Greg May (Grit.CX) on riding the Tour Divide, and Ed Shoote from the We Love Mountains blog.

Shillies is Cumbrian for gravel and as it turns out, we've got plenty of it.

Adventure Cycle Festival 5

Ghyllside Cycles have been working on a challenge event that takes in some of the finest gravel tracks in the area along a 100km route. Whilst the distance may seem on the short side to the hardened roadies out there, the elevation and nature of the trails will almost definitely make up for it. This one isn't for the faint hearted.

Entries cost £30 and will include your weekend ticket to the Adventure Cycle Festival. For the challenge to be in line with the adventurous spirit of the event, the trails won't be waymarked but there will be a couple of feed stations along the route. You will be armed with GPS coordinates or a traditional paper map as well as a timing chip.

It's definitely not a race but it will definitely be a challenge. Finishers will get an engraved stainless steel pint pot, their time in a spreadsheet and tonnes of kudos. There will also be spot prizes to be had.

With Ghyllside Cycles

Ever fancied building your own adventure cycling wheelset? Over the course of 3 workshops throughout the weekend, you will learn to build a wheelset with components of your choice from lacing all the way to trueing. At the end of the festival, you get to ride away on a set of wheels you built yourself.

Ghyllside Cycles are working on a landing page with spoke, rim and hub options which you can order from their site. They will bring these to the event together with wheel building jigs and years of wheelbuilding expertise.

During the first session, you will lace both wheels before tightening the spokes during the second workshop. The final workshop is where the fun really starts - trueing the wheel and making sure it is properly dished.

Whilst bragging rights of having built your own set of wheels will be a big draw to this workshop in its own right, having a good understanding of lacing and trueing of wheels is invaluable when you're well off the beaten track and your wheel gives up beneath you.

Due to the intensive level of tuition required to create a strong wheelset, numbers will be very limited (max. 8 people) so if you would like to attend the workshop get your parts ordered from their site as soon as possible.

This workshop will cost £10 to take part plus the cost of components.
