Avril O'Donnell

Brathay 10in10 Athlete

I am Avril and I am 38 years old. I live in Dunfermline with Paul and our children Megan (12), Jamie (9), Aaron (9) and Mia who was born in April this year. I work in a primary school as a deputy headteacher.

Running has always been part of my life and I have run for as long as I can remember. I ran my first marathon for charity in 2013 inspired by a very special little girl, Evie B. Evie was battling cancer and showed such a fearless attitude I decided to adopt some of her spirit and challenge myself to run a marathon. I ran the London marathon to raise money for CLIC Sargent and raised over £3000, which I was extremely proud of. I continued to run marathons and was inspired again to run for charity in memory of Evie in 2014, as she had sadly passed away. This time I ran to raise money for Rachel House where Evie spent the last days of her life with her amazing family.

I have now run 48 marathons, to raise awareness and money for charities as well as to challenge myself to achieve new goals. My biggest running inspiration is my partner Paul, he inspires me every single day. Paul has ran over 100 marathons and has always supported me with my running and encouraged me to push myself to new limits, believing in me every step of the way. He has trained with me on cold winter mornings, running in rain, hail and snow and kicking me out the door when I’d rather stay in bed! We have run in lots of amazing places together and met lots of lovely people.

Paul has completed the Brathay 10in10 three times and I have always been in awe of this particular running challenge. He has spoken many times of the ‘Brathay bubble’ and the magic of the event. Each year we have come down for the Windermere Marathon and the 10in10 runners have amazed me! I have considered applying so many times but my work has held me back as I can’t take time off out of the school holidays. I don’t think I have come down from cloud nine since the call to say I was in!

There are two major parts to this challenge for me, the training and the fundraising. The fundraising part is a massive undertaking but I have a plan so I am hoping that it will all come together.

Goal: £6,500
