James Thomas

Brathay 10in10 Athlete

I’m James Thomas, 27 years of age and live in Barrow-in-Furness. I work for BAE Systems as a Commissioning Engineer currently working on the Astute class Submarines. I have two daughters, Millie, who is 2, and Georgie, who is 8 months. I joined Walney Wind Cheetahs in 2017, initially to shed some weight; however I found that I was improving really quickly and have now caught the marathon bug!

To maintain running motivation, I booked my first marathon for September 2017 in Loch Ness. I raised money for Macmillan Cancer Research, who took care of my fiancée Kayleigh’s late Nana. It was incredibly tough and I vowed never again; I booked my second soon after and completed Manchester in April 2018. This time, I was much better prepared and loved every minute of it.

I have found it hard to motivate myself to go running, like most people, particularly when going for longer distance runs as part of my preparation for my marathon races. The hardest part for me is just putting my shoes on and getting out of the door! But once I’m out and a few miles in, all the stress of the day falls away and my mood brighten. The further into a run, the better I seem to feel, apart from my tired legs of course! Running helps me clear my mind and feel refreshed which is why I love running.

I remember being inspired by Eddie Izzard’s documentary, Marathon Man. He completed 43 marathons in 51 days and I thought that I’d like to try something like that. It did initially appear impossible. Izzard had the support of a professional team behind him; how is an ordinary man like me meant to achieve a similar feat? However, this year I met a 10in10 finisher who instantly hooked me onto the 10in10 challenge and the idea to push myself, physically and mentally, to the limit.

Although I’m currently nervous about not being able to complete all 10 days, I am confident that I’ll be prepared for this event and will hopefully enjoy every day knowing that I have raised thousands of pounds for the Brathay Trust.
