James Thomas

Brathay 10in10 Athlete

I am 29-years-old and from Barrow in Furness in Cumbria. I work for BAE Systems, who currently build Submarines for the Royal Navy, and I am a Commissioning Engineer.

I started running three years ago and run for Walney Wind Cheetahs. My first race was the Blackpool Half Marathon in May 2017. With very little training I found myself struggling after the first 100m. At the age of 25 I weighed 18 stone and thought something needs to change.

I decided to sign up for a marathon, the Loch Ness in Sept 2017, to give me something to focus on. I finished in under four hours and a stone lighter, which was my target. I said never again, but I soon signed up for the Manchester Marathon in 2018, this is where I met 10in10 runner Sonja Farish who told me about the Brathay 10in10. I was instantly hooked on the idea of pushing my mind and body to the limit so I applied at the first opportunity.

I was lucky enough to be accepted and didn't ever consider not being able to finish it, despite having only completed two marathons in my life. After nine training marathons and raising £4000, the 10in10 soon came round and proved to be the hardest but best 10 days of my life.

Being involved with Brathay has shown me what they do to help young people in day to day life, especially as they work in my local town, Barrow. This is what’s motivated me to come back and to fundraise again for this fantastic charity.

I am hoping to pretty much copy my last training and fundraising plan over the next 5 months. I am ready to get started after a well-earned rest!
