James Thomas

Brathay 10in10 Athlete

I am 28-years-old and from Barrow in Furness in Cumbria. I work for BAE Systems, who currently build Submarines for the Royal Navy, and I am a Commissioning Engineer.

I run for the Walney Wind Cheetahs and I have done so since I started running two years ago. I started running in May 2017 after entering for a Blackpool half marathon, a month earlier. With no training I struggled after the first 100m. At the age of 25 and 18 stone I thought something needs to change.

I decided to sign up for a marathon, the Loch Ness in Sept 2017, to give me something to focus on. I completed it a stone lighter and in sub four hours which was my target. I said never again, but I soon signed up for the Manchester Marathon in 2018 which is where I met 10in10 runner Sonja Farish. She told me about the Brathay 10in10. I was instantly hooked on the idea of pushing my mind and body to the limit so I applied as soon as I could.

I was lucky enough to be accepted and I never considered not being able to finish it, despite having only completed two marathons in my life. After nine training marathons and raising £4000, the 10in10 soon came round and proved to be the hardest but best 10 days of my life.

During the past year being involved with Brathay showed me what they actually do to help people in day to day life, especially as they work in my local town, Barrow. This is what’s motivated me to come back and to fundraise again for a fantastic charity.

I am hoping to pretty much copy my last training and fundraising plan over the next 10 months. I am ready to get started after a well-earned rest!
