Marie Williamson

Brathay 10in10 Athlete

Hi, I’m Marie. I’m a 43 year old woman who’s been running since 2009. I initially started running because I was finally guaranteed a place in the London Marathon in 2010. I’d previously applied five times and all had been unsuccessful- sixth time is a charm, right?! Fortunately, they were unsuccessful because I hadn’t actually started running- it was sheer stubbornness and persistence that I continuously reapplied. And thankfully I did otherwise I wouldn’t be where I am today.

I thoroughly enjoyed my London Marathon experience (after a while…) and had the added benefit of losing lots of weight. I was heading swiftly towards 16 stone before I started running & lost 4 & 1/2 stone through training for this marathon. Once I’d completed my first marathon, there was no stopping me. I was hooked- spurred on all the more after discovering the 100 Marathon Club at an event. I decided that one day I’d be a member, proudly sporting one of the 100 Club vests.

I’m a member of the Glossopdale Harriers and the Derbyshire Dynamos. The Derbyshire Dynamos is a virtual club I initially joined for race discounts and to simply be part of a club. I currently run and train with the Glossopdale Harriers and I’m certain Coach J will share his wisdom and along with my fellow club members, support me through this massive challenge.

I’m motivated by running with my friends. We force each other out of the door… even when we can think up thousands of excuses not to bother! We run further/faster than we probably would have if we were on our own and it helps keep the training interesting- it’s surprising where our conversations can lead to!!

I’m also inspired by running in different places and on different terrains. I’ve just ‘HAD’ to take trips away to some beautiful places, including Rome, Edinburgh, Berlin and Bordeaux for the famous Marathon du Medoc. That’s not forgetting Windermere: the Lake District, water, scenery, ice cream (!). What’s not to like?

My current tally is 37 marathons but that's creeping up monthly. My aim for 2018 is to complete at least 1 marathon per month. I'm not sure why I’ve added the challenge of running 10 marathons in 10 days..! Visiting Ambleside to run the Windermere Marathon several years ago, I saw some 10in10 runners finishing their 9th marathon and decided right there and then that I wanted to take part. What a challenge!

That's not to mention the massive fundraising challenge ahead of me, but it's for an amazing cause, supporting young people & children across the North of England. Their mission is to improve life's opportunities for children, young people and families by inspiring them to engage positively in their communities, reaching an astonishing 7000 young lives each year. I’ve previously worked as a teaching assistant in a primary school so I know personally how influential the experiences and opportunities offered by the Brathay Trust are to these children's upbringings. I'm looking forward to learning more about the work they do as I progress along this epic journey ahead of me.
