Neil Jones

Brathay 10in10 Athlete

I will be 50 years old when I run the 10in10 in May. I am an IT Director at Digital Rewards Group Limited.

I started running marathons in 2006 (London) to prove to myself I could do it and to raise money. When I finished I immediately knew I wanted to do more. After the second and third marathon I decided that my goal was to complete 10, which I did. That was supposed to be the end of it. Then emails from Brathay arrived in my inbox and I started to get itchy feet, thinking okay I’ll just do one more.

I found out about the Brathay 10in10 when I completed my second ASICS Windermere Marathon and became aware of some crazy individuals doing the challenge. At around the same time I had read ‘Feet in the Clouds’ and more recently ‘There's No Map in Hell’, both books synonymous with running in the Lakes.

My company (Kids Pass) are always looking for ways in which we can enrich the lives of children and families, so reading more about the great work of Brathay Trust provided ample inspiration to enter the 10in10. If I am honest, half of me was hoping I wouldn’t get in, but I think secretly I really do want to do it. Now I am in and I can’t wait to get started and to really help make a difference to the young people Brathay supports.

Those I turn to for inspiration are Joss Naylor and Steve Birkinshaw simply because of their legendary running feats in the Lakes. On a personal note, having lost close family members to cancer, they inspired me to do marathons in the first place and contribute to many great charities, hopefully helping to make a small difference.

My greatest fear is getting injured and registering a DNF. I’m not 100% confident I can physically complete all 10 but mentally I think I can!

Goal: £5,000
