Dave Edwards

Brathay 10in10 Athlete

I'm Dave from Barrow-in-Furness, where I've lived all my life. I'm 52 years old and married to Michelle for 29 years. We have a lovely 26-year-old daughter, Emily Grace, and are so proud of all her achievements. We also have memories of Elizabeth Rose who is sadly no longer with us, but always in our hearts. Elizabeth would have been 24 years old this year, she passed away aged only 9 months through an illness she was sadly born with.

I've been a keen (some might say addicted!) runner since 2007 when I joined Cumbria Constabulary. I was a member of a local gym at the time, but after spending 8 hours a day at training school the last thing I wanted was to be cooked up in the gym. It was then I decided to take up running, if not to de-stress and unwind, but to improve my fitness and maintain a positive mindset.

Over the years I've used my love of running to support a number of charities, including Great North West Air Ambulance, Calvert Trust and Brathay Trust.

For the past 10 years, I've run the Keswick to Barrow (K2B), a 40-mile road run raising money for local charities. When I was a Police Officer I was able to engage a huge number of colleagues to donate to my chosen charities. My best achievement in the K2B was in 2014, when I ran with my running mate Grant Johnson. We finished the 40 miles with only 43 seconds between us, Grant finished 1st and me 2nd in a time of 4hrs 57mins. We both had the ASICS Windermere Marathon the following week and vowed to rest our legs and go for 'good-for-age' times for entry into the 2015 London Marathon. We didn't rest....we didn't get our GFA times either. I missed mine by 48 seconds finishing Brathay in 3hrs15'48.

I usually miss the Windermere Marathon as it clashes with the K2B. However, this year's K2B is in September (postponed due to the pandemic) so I was able to run the Windermere Marathon in May. As I crossed the line Scott Umpleby mentioned the 10in10 - the carrot was dangled! I took the bait and applied for a place.

I still can't believe I'm doing this - running a marathon, day after day, for 10 days! I'm ready for the challenge and I aim to put all my previous running experience and a year of training into practice - I just need to train smart which is something I don't do....it's all or nothing with me!

I am so grateful to the Brathay team for offering me a place in this event. I'm ready for it and look forward to meeting all the other athletes over the coming months.
