Greg Thorley

Brathay 10in10 Athlete

In 2021 I participated in the Brathay 10in10, raising funds for Brathay Trust's work with children and young people. Unfortunately, I suffered an asthma episode on Day 7 (which I finished) and had to withdraw partway through Day 8 when it re-occurred. I was immediately determined to right this and signed up for the 2022 team! Thankfully I was accepted.

I ran my first marathon in 2014, Edinburgh Marathon, which I ran for charity. Up to the Summer of 2021 I have completed 20 marathons. I tend to prefer trail courses but really it's any course that's challenging and has nice views, which Windermere certainly does! I am really looking forward to the 2022 challenge as even though it's an individual event the sense of team is amazing. It really feels good to be part of a group all going through the same emotions and challenges.

I am a member of Ackworth Road Runners and not even the first in the club to attempt the Brathay 10in10 - Liane Warren did the event a few years ago. I don't just do running now though, this year I took up competitive cycling again. I used to race a lot when I was younger but it took a back seat for quite a few years so I now do a mix of running and biking. This included supporting the Brathay 262 in 2021 - which I hope to do again soon. When I am running I like to listen to my breathing, my footsteps and absorb the sensations of running and pushing myself harder. It's like my meditation in a way, a very tiring sweaty way.

By supporting this challenge we will be helping children, young people and their families discover their talents and skills, giving them the confidence to improve their lives.
