Joanne Egerton

Brathay 10in10 Athlete

I am 45 years young, have the most loyal and loving partner Andrew, and I have 3 boys. I work for the Council in Risk Management by day and am an enthusiastic run leader for Hyde Village Striders and Tameside Vegan Runners in the evenings - Oh and I am Vegan.

The closest I have come to a challenge like the Brathay 10in10 is a double marathon a few years ago. I have remained quite proud of the fact that I accomplished this, however, I am always looking for a new running challenge. I was looking for an ultra to enter as I am still an ultra virgin, but was then inspired by a previous participant, Sean warburton, who completed the 10in10 in 2018. He really did sell it to me and clearly loved the experience, which inspired me to follow in his footsteps and grab this once-in-a-lifetime experience!

I started running in 2013. I joined a couch to 5k programme with Hyde Village Striders RC. It was the best thing I ever did as I soon inherited a whole new family – The Running Community!

I became a run leader in 2019 so that I could inspire and encourage other people to run. I am proud to say that each runner who ran regularly with me in 2019 all achieved amazing PBs at different distances. I am vegan and a member of Vegan Runners UK. I had the opportunity at the beginning of the year to set up a new vegan runners group and have recently hosted our first Couch to 5k programme. I now lead weekly group runs for both my clubs.

I was in a children's home when I was 8 years old. Unfortunately, both my parents were drunks and I went into care as an emergency case. After 3 years of being in care, I was put into a foster home when I was 11 years old. The work of Brathay Trust will give me all the motivation I need to “get the job done”, as the Trust improves the lives of young people who are vulnerable (like I was) and this is why it means so much to me.

I do not underestimate how difficult this challenge is going to be, not in the slightest. I will be spending time away from my family and will be putting my life and soul into the 10in10 during the build-up and on each of the 10 marathons. I have learned to believe in myself, and I believe that with support from my partner and my boys, I will do myself proud and complete this amazing challenge.
