George Johnstone

Brathay 10in10 Athlete

I’m George Johnstone. A 48 year old runner based in Cumbria and the Lake District. I have three fantastic children - Lizzie 19, Cameron 18, Charlie 17 and a wonderful partner, Cheryl.

I started out running local 5km events and I enjoyed it so much that I just continued for longer over greater distances and have never looked back.

I ran my first ultramarathon in 2018 raising money for the Royal Victoria Infirmary where a close family member continues to this day to receive treatment for a chronic illness. Since then, I have competed in several marathons including the London and Loch Ness marathons as well as running a marathon inside an old prison! I have completed a number of ultras with varying distances, including running 70 miles west to east along Hadrian’s Wall in a day.

In late 2022 I ran the Liverpool-Leeds canal ultramarathon, a total of 130 mile non-stop in just under 40 hours. However, 10 marathons in 10 days is something else entirely! This will be my first 10in10 event and I can’t tell you what a challenge this will be for me. I am not a huge fan of long runs on consecutive days. Personally, I would much prefer to run an ultra marathon and then rest up rather than run a marathon one day, and then another the next for 10 days!! I want to stress that I am nothing special. I’m not a super athlete and am certainly not a pro runner. I have a full time job and train in my spare time in the evenings and at weekends.

As a locally based runner, I can’t wait to get going on this incredible journey and help support an amazing charity. Simply put, my aim is to raise as much money as possible to enable Brathay Trust to help even more disadvantaged children and young people; and to hopefully inspire anyone and everyone including you reading this with the belief that anything is possible if you work hard enough and believe in yourself.

Your donations and support are very much appreciated. Thank you.
