Liz Tunna

Brathay 10in10 Athlete

Hello there. My name is Liz. I’m 36 years old and I live in Chester.

I can’t begin to tell you how excited I am be part of this wonderful event once again. Brathay and the Brathay Windermere Marathon hold such a special place in my heart. I’ve always loved the Lake District and Windermere was my very first marathon back in 2009 and where I truly found my love of running. I was inspired by all of the amazing 10in10’ers way back then and in 2011 I came back to run the 10in10 for myself. Every year, I come back to Brathay to run the marathon, but it has always been my dream to come back and do the 10in10 all over again.

To date, I have run around 208 marathons - roughly 70 of these are ultras - and I have completed many runs of 100 miles and over. I love a good canal and have successfully completed the Grand Union Canal Race, running 145 miles non-stop from Birmingham to London, four times and the Liverpool to Leeds 130-mile Race four times. I was absolutely chuffed to run my fastest time of just over 32 hours at the Liverpool to Leeds Race in 2021. I am also a former Guinness World Record holder for the ‘Youngest woman to run 100 marathons’, which I have officially held since 2011, having completed my 100th Marathon in Chester. Having set myself the goal to run 100 marathons, I achieved my goal in just over two years and I am a member of the UK’s 100 Marathon Club.

However, I want to stress that I really am just an ordinary person. I’m not super speedy but I am committed to achieving what I set out to accomplish and I have a strong sense of resilience. I know too well both how beautiful and how hilly the Windermere Marathon course is. Despite my experience, marathons are never easy. Getting out there to run a very hilly marathon every day for 10 days really is tough. Comparatively, I find it much ‘easier’ to run 100+ miles in one go than running multi-day marathon events but this amazing charity is so worth the aches.

As a primary school teacher, I thoroughly believe that each child should be given the opportunities and the challenges that they need to be successful and to reach their potential. Furthermore, I truly believe in the concept of enriching lives and striving for success in terms of equipping children with the tools they need to thrive. Brathay Hall Trust does such an amazing job of supporting disadvantaged children & young people and I hope to raise as much money as I can so that they can continue to inspire, empower and facilitate a sense of resilience and love of challenge amongst the young people they reach.
