Golden Bond Runner
Brathay Trust helps our disadvantaged youth in many ways by putting together team building exercises at Lake Windermere or Bradford is one tested way of diverting these young people away from reoffending or getting involved in criminal activity. If only Brathay had been available in Cornwall in the 80's then some of my close friends may well have made a chosen path that changed their lives for good. Recently, Brathay has linked with St Luke's Hospice, based in the West Country, to assist young people dealing with bereavement which hits home for me.
Depression and anxiety have played their part in my life since my early teens and making a return to running Marathons was my way of punching a way out of it when I hit rockbottom in 2008. I had previously run 7 Marathons over the 10 years prior to this but I found myself signing up to the 2012 Brathay 10in10 after partaking in just the one Brathay Marathon in 2011 where I discovered amazing folk accomplishing amazing things and my life changed dramatically with immediate effect.
I have now completed 34 official Brathay Marathons which form part of my 219 total. I am still completely mad but I am now Chairman of the 100 Marathon Club and I only wish my favourite Teacher, who had belief in me that I could do great things, could see me now !
When I say amazing folk. I really mean very ordinary folk. Ordinary folk can do amazing stuff and achieve what others deem impossible; whether it is one of the Athletes or one of the Brathay Staff, Support Crews or one of the many Volunteers. This is a 365 days a year journey for Brathay Trust and for some of the youngsters that benefit from all of their hard work.
Most of these young people become amazing too and that is why I am making a comeback. Every day is like overcoming a Marathon for some people, all I do is make it look achievable. However, I do not claim to make it look easy - I simply keep on plugging away until I see light at the end of the tunnel (or a nice bling medal!)
