Race report: The 35th Langdale Marathon & Half Marathon

The 35th edition of the Langdale Marathon & Half Marathon was another fantastic day of running. Despite the chilly weather, it remained dry we were even fortunate to catch a glimpse of blue skies in the afternoon!

An impressive 543 runners assembled in the spectacular Langdale valley on Saturday 21st October to tackle the UK’s toughest Marathon and Half Marathon. Brathay took over the event in 2018 and proceeds support their charitable mission to improve the life changes of vulnerable children and young people.

The winners of the Langdale Marathon 2023 were Alex Cowin (Penny Lane Striders) who crossed the line in 03:01:48 and Mary Heald (Lancaster and Morecambe AC), in a time of 03:31:16.

Langdale Half Marathon winners were Will Clarke (Barrow Runners), time of 01:16:50 and Amy Whelan (Glaxo Hoad Hill Harriers) time of 01:37:26. Will Clarke’s time for the Half Marathon is the fastest since Brathay took over the event in 2018! The record, according to Rocket Rod, belongs to Paul Muller (01:12:32) set in 2003.

Winner’s received a medal featuring Harrison Stickle – one of the fells overlooking the course. This is the first medal in a series of five, designed by local artist Eva Grange.
