In partnership with the Climbers Shop, Brathay hosted two new trail races, the Ambleside 25K & 50K which took off from Rothay Park on Sunday 11th September.

The event was born out of 60k route delivered in 2019 and 2020 but it was decided that a 25k and 50k format would allow more runners to enjoy a fantastic day out in the Lake District hills.

Each race started with a minute’s silence to show our respects for Queen Elizabeth II. It was a chance for runners to share a moment in reflection.

Friends and Ambleside School and the Hairy Collie Coffee provided refreshments from Rothay Park with Salutation Hotel providing a fantastic refreshment station for runners at checkpoint 1. Voom Nutrition bars and electrolyte drink were on offer at stations to ensure runners were powered up all the way round.

The 50K was won by Tim Hartley of Notts AC in 04:54:04 and the first woman was Angela Tarlton of Harwell Harriers in 06:22:06. Tim and Angela both received stunning trophies made by local supporters Miles Moore Ceramics.

The 25k was won by Richard Wilson of Kendal AAC in 02:18:53. First woman back and third overall in the 25K was Betty Bergstrand of Middlesbrough AC (Mandale) in 02:24:44. Congratulations to all who ran on the day.

Winners in all age categories will received prizes donated by The Climbers Shop in Ambleside and all runners received a limited edition Hawkshead Brathay Extra Pale Ale, hand bottled at their brewery in Staveley complete with bottle opener medal!

Race Director, Scott Umpleby said,

‘It has been a difficult time for organised events when costs of living are rising. We cannot thank runners enough for turning up and making it possible. Hosting these events brings together a like-minded community for fun and adventure and we are grateful we can continue to do this with the support of our runners, the local community and our fantastic sponsors.

We have received such positive feedback that we will be hosting the event again next year’.

A huge thank you to all our sponsors, volunteers and supporters. Your support has helped us set a date for next year – Sunday 17th September. We hope to see you there!
